jm-at-hilcJohn is Professor of Marine Transport and Logistics at Newcastle University. He is based in the School of Marine Science and Technology which is within the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering. John joined Newcastle University in September 2008 from the University of Hull where he held the Peter Thompson Chair in Logistics. At Hull he was also founding Director of the University of Hull Logistics Institute where he retains close links as a Visiting Professor. Prior to this he held academic posts at University College Dublin and at The Irish Management Institute, and as a visiting lecturer at Trinity College Dublin. In 1997 he was a Fulbright Scholar at Boston College and in 2004 he spent a sabbatical at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) teaching international logistics on their MLog programme.

A native of Ireland, John held a number of roles prior to embarking upon an academic career: he worked as a freight clerk with Aer Lingus, as an analyst with the Irish airports authority, as a graduate trainee in the Irish Civil Service (in both the Marine and Treasury departments), and as company secretary of a seaweed harvesting company.

As well as his roles as a professor at Newcastle and as a visiting professor at Hull, John is an external examiner to Liverpool, Southampton and Maynooth universities, and a guest lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, The Irish Management Institute, and University College Cork. John is a very active researcher and is currently supervising six PhD students. He disseminates his research though regular publications and conference presentations (for an up to date list see the ‘Research and Downloads section’). He is also co-editor of the International Journal of Logistics. In addition to his academic work John has also worked with a variety of organisations helping them to solve logistics problems (see the ‘Applied Work’ section) and he regularly delivers seminars for executives in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
